Local Council meeting of 3rd June 2024, position of the Greens

2.01 We, the dei gréng, voted in favour of the ‘Diversity Charter’ within the municipal council. This charter aims to create a legal framework for awareness, acceptance and equality of all diversification n within the municipal workforce. At a time when Europe is experiencing a political shift to the right, rejecting discrimination and accepting diversity and pluralism is a sign of a healthy, strong and modern society. At a time when Europe is experiencing a political shift to the right, rejecting discrimination and accepting diversity and pluralism is the sign of a healthy, strong and modern society. That’s what déi gréng stands for!

2.11 The local authority has purchased a parcel of woodland near the Herschesfeld. Climate change has made it important for public authorities to take advantage of opportunities to access such valuable land. Déi gréng can only support such initiatives. We have voted in favour of this point, to better protect nature on this plot of land.

Items 3.01, 3.02 and 3.03 concerned amendments to the PAP. The corresponding building regulations were partially amended and adapted. In one case, the same conditions were introduced as for neighbouring properties. In another case, the amendment makes it possible to authorise the construction of social housing. In the third situation, there was no written agreement with clear building rules, which is now the case. As all these changes are necessary for the Greens, we have approved the amendments to these building regulations.

4.01 The College of Aldermen and the local authority’s civil engineer took the time to explain the street renovation project in the centre of the village of Peppeng to the municipal council. Thanks to this project, several streets will be partially greened, which is particularly important for providing shade in public spaces and extracting CO2 from the atmosphere. To make the public squares more user-friendly, a relaxation area with fountains is proposed in addition to small green spaces. Here, the Greens have proposed planting plants around this square, which has been positively received. Some of the rainwater should be recuperated and collected in an underground basin to moisten the trees and plants. Speed limits in zones 20 and 30 and the construction of suitable pavements to replace the existing ones are long overdue, if only for safety reasons! There are also plans to develop the Rue des Ponts as a 30 zone along its entire length within the village. However, at this point, the PC6 national cycle path linking Hellange to Bettembourg passes along this street in mixed traffic. Compared to the current situation, a 30-zone would of course be an improvement, but given the traffic there, it is unfortunately not yet a suitable solution for cyclists. The College of Aldermen should investigate ways of limiting traffic at this point and ensure that the planned speed limit is also respected through more appropriate construction measures. One positive point to note is that a system for separating rainwater and wastewater will be installed, which will relieve congestion at the wastewater treatment plant. In general terms, this project implements many green ideas. It enhances the village centre and, in our view, is a sound measure for improving the quality of life of the people of Peppange.

As part of the 2024-2025 school organisation and the 2024-2027 School Development Plan (5.01 and 5.02), the Mayor announced, by way of additional information, that the construction of an annex to the Berchem school campus is expected. The Crauthem school will finally be renovated in 2026, so that all the children of Roeserbann will have to go to school in Berchem. In addition, a general increase in the number of children attending school is to be expected in the coming years. Unfortunately, the new school campus in Berchem is not large enough to accommodate the children from Crauthem. The Greens are surprised by this news, because when the Berchem school campus was presented to the local council at the time, this was an important argument to justify the size of the project. For déi gréng, this indicates a planning error, as less than a year after the inauguration of the complex, an extension is needed.
