Problems linked to the replacement bus following the closure of the railway line between Bettembourg and Luxembourg

Déi gréng Réiserbann recently received critical comments from citizens concerned about the closure of the railway line between Bettembourg and Luxembourg, regarding the solution of a replacement bus service during this summer closure. In response to these concerns, we have sent a number of written questions to the College of Aldermen.

The criticisms include the lack of direct access from Berchem to Howald Gare. Under normal circumstances, the train journey between Berchem station and Howald station takes around 7 minutes. With the replacement bus, the same journey takes around 25 minutes, requiring a passage through Hesperange and Bonnevoie, followed by a tram journey to Howald.

Despite these drawbacks, the College of Aldermen has expressed its satisfaction with the solution proposed by CFL, stating that no changes are necessary. This situation does, however, result in a significant loss of time for workers: an extra 18 minutes per journey, i.e. 36 minutes per day and 3 hours per week on the basis of five working days.

The College of Aldermen assumes that traffic congestion between the municipality and the capital will be reduced during the summer. However, dissatisfaction with this replacement service could lead many public transport users to opt for the car, thereby running the risk of worsening traffic congestion towards Luxembourg City.

Déi gréng Réiserbann regrets that the municipality did not seize the opportunity to intervene with CFL to obtain a better solution for our residents, particularly those who depend on public transport for their business trips. In addition, it should be noted that the frequency of 4 connections per hour, previously available, is not being achieved either by the replacement bus or by the usual rail service, despite an increase in the number of users in Berchem.
